Re:re:TB Thompkins pinks-Ovation

I have had Ovation planted in my yard for at least 10 years--maybe
longer--and it does not increase quickly, but it does survive here in Zone
3/4--and blooms almost every year-- mine blooms as a dark pink--and the one
I saw last spring at the Hips Happening looked rather different--paler with
veining on falls--and the clump was bigger than mine ever gets--
In the club garden we have Beverly Sills--which dies every year and we buy
it again-'cause it is in the 'Dykes Row". Queen of Hearts does quite well
in the club garden--increases and blooms every year--every 3rd year the
clump is divided and 3 starts replanted--and usually have at least 8-10
rhizomes for our sale. Vanity's child has survived 2 years now--much better
than Vanity--which does not survive here.Lenora Pearl grows like a weed in
my garden--at 3 years had a dozen blooms--at the club garden does not do
that well--but does more than just survive.
There are a couple other pinks which do o.k. here--Pink Boa--an older,
rather insipid pink--but overall we have more trouble keeping pinks
surviving here--the winter does them in!! We have very low humidity
here--unless it is raining--are classified as 'high mountain desert' by the
amount of rainfall here--sorta the same as Inner Mongolia--and usually the
winters are as dry as the summers--our snow is not the big. wet flakes the
fall near the coast--rather the snowflakes are little, dry, balls like
tapioca--good powder snow skiing--but the dryness and cold is very hard on
all plants and trees here. I always thought that a somewhat higher humidity
would be better for iris--and other plants.
But what I cannot raise in TB's, I raise as IB's and SDB,s--they love it
here!!
Carryl zone 3/4 in western Montana--back to winter with cold, windy days
and nights again
