Diana,

Yes, William Rickatson Dykes was an English schoolmaster at Charterhouse,
one of the famous English "public" (i.e., private) schools. Godalming is a
town in Surrey about 20 miles southwest of London. It is also notable
horticulturally as the site of Munstead Wood, the home of the famous
landscape gardener Gertrude Jekyll, who was Dykes' older contemporary.
