Hermodactylus tuberosus - widow iris, or snakes head iris.
Native to S. France, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Israe. Naturalised in Devon
and Cornwall. Easily grown in well-drained sunny places. reticulata like
leaves emerge in Autumn, blooms in March/April. (NH)
Protect from slugs.
Maybe the slugs ate her blooms and she didn't notice?
