Wow!! Many great public and private responses to my inquiry regarding
reblooming iris.
Many people sent me to the rebloom info page on Sutton's website at
www.suttoniris.com
I found the Sutton page very informative listing the reported rebloomers
with a frequency rating as well as coolest rebloom growing zone. The 2's
and 3's with a minimum of zone 5 will be a starting point for me.
I live in Wake Forest, North Carolina, zone 7 with my wife and children. We
just moved into a new home with more gardening space a month ago. With the
additional garden space I am starting a reblooming iris hybridizing program.
One goal is breed for easy rebloom in at least a zone 5 garden. I feel our
zone 7 garden is a good area for hybridizing and there are many gardening
friends up north who can trial any possible future
introduction/registrations.
One person also sent me to the iris-talk archive at
http://www.hort.net/lists/ I did a search for "rebloom" and there is much
information to be garnered. I will be spending some late evenings taking it
all in.
Rosalie Figge wrote about the Friendship Garden and the catalog they
publish. This sounds like a great starting point also, especially for the
newer varities. Friendship introduces for Lloyd Zurbrigg who lives about 30
miles from me. I will be visiting his garden within the next two weeks. I
understand this man has a wealth of knowledge and so I will listen to all he
has to say.
Rosalie also mentioned Charlie Brown and the Reblooming Iris Society. I see
that Charlie just posted tonight about the rebloomers group. I will join
this group this week and will also acquire the reblooming checklist.
Charlie mentioned the new rebloomers website that is currently being
designed at www.rebloomingiris.org
Thank you to all that sent along information.
I am 38 years old as I start this reblooming iris hybridizing program. I am
more interested in breeding for the "whole plant" instead of just a "pretty
face." The gardening space I have for the hybridizing is not very large but
it is large enough for a disciplined program. This summer I plan to acquire
breeding stock and learn as much as possible about iris in general and as
much detail relating to hybridizing the rebloomers.
My biggest fear is that dreaded "Rot" that I hear so much about with irises.
What are the main causes for rot? Also, more importantly, what is the best
way to keep the rot characteristic out of a breeding line? I hope many of
you will respond to these two questions which are open for a wide range of
responses from different views.
Thanks again everyone.
