Re: Best source for iris descriptions and pictures

Tom:
If you send me a photo and description to my personal e-mail, I
will see if I can find a match. I will be 'bed-booking' for Presby in
a few weeks, and would be happy to search for you. I don't know any
source to search yourself, except if you think it is 'historic' you
could try HIPS.
PS If anyone else wants to send me pictures and descriptions of
unknowns, I will take a shot at anything.
I would need to know: is it an early, mid, or late bloomer?
Does it have purple based fans?
Does it have a scent?
How tall is it?
How many blooms per stalk?
Is it a rebloomer?
Anything else significant about it?
If you know anything about the history of your plant, ie, "grandma
gave it to me in 1979", for instance, that would be helpful.
Keep in mind that there are many thousands of bearded iris cultivars,
and just by looking at a picture, and matching up descriptions, would
not be sufficient to positively id anything...however, we can pick
some likely candidates out of the lineup.
If you still REALLY REALLY want an undisputable id, you should get
that possible named iris and grow it right next to your existing one;
they should give identical blooms. Or if you can spare a rhizome send
it to someone who does grow the suspected matched iris and then
check them.
