Betty in Kentucky asked:
<How are the stalks and subsequent bud count looking this
year? I seem to notice some missing branches. Had a lot of extra falls
on
the little ones, especially JEWEL BABY. Are colors 'normal'?>
The last round of freezes wiped out blooms on LUMALITE, AGATHA CHRISTIE
and a few others, and even I. reichenbachii is opening a few four part
blooms, probably from the previous round of temps into the low 20s, tho
there is not other evidence of damage to it.
There are a lot of early TBs out there that I rarely see much bloom on
showing stalks, but I've been cheating and covering them with Reemay the
last month during temps to the low 20s & teens. One of my seedlings (no
protection) that was nicely branched last year looks pretty wretched -
one side of the stalk is sunken, like celery, branches missing or
stunted, sick looking buds. Many of the other uncovered stalks on TBs
are stunted and some look like they aren't going to finish developing.
Colors? Ranging from healthy green to brown or gray blotched or
streaked with black, some with the top 1/3 of the leaves white and bent
over.
Oh, you meant the flowers.....lets see if any of those buds open.
Anybody interested in photos of how different cultivars respond to
weather? I could take some nice pictures of nasty looking foliage.
To end on a more positive note, RARE EDITION is loaded with very pretty
blooms this year. A bit down in the foliage, but very nice.
