I can't find the question right now, but someone asked a while back
where to find out more information on the formation of pigments in
irises, especially carotenes (I hope I'm remembering the question
right).  I don't remember seeing an answer - The World of Iris
(available from AIS bookstore) has a whole chapter on pigments,
including diagrams of molecules and precursors.  Hope this is what you
were looking for?
