Dear Cheryl - I am sort of interested in what answers you receive!
However, I'll add my thoughts about this. Since you ae in zone 6, you MIGHT
be able to move the iris now as a clump (think I would only move part of it
- as an experiment - leaving part as a control ----- a hangover from training
under my science-oriented husband, who believed in controls inexperiments)
BUT you would need to expect no bloom this year from the moved
portion. By the way, WHAT is an "invitation" iris? ?
And is it a dwarf, ?? TB ?? If it is a dwarf, it will be easier to move,
since it is short and not topple over, that is, if you don't cut the
leaves, hoping it might bloom this Spring. How far along are your irises??
Since I am zone 7, my dwarfs are now blooming - since midweek (about 4/24).
But not the TBs -- some I haven't been able to see for the weeds - I need
help!
Not knowing what "invitation" means - I wonder if it IS a rebloomer! That
could be one reason it hasn't rebloomed. Another reason would be how much
sun does it get? --Have your trees/bushes grown up around it since it was
planted? Also how much water - and when? How much "help". such as
fertilizer? Do you have other rebloomers that strut their stuff?
Actually, ordinarily, it would be better to move them after the bloom
season. Many years ago, I heard Ben Hager (in a lecture to our iris group)
say that the best time for irises to be moved is immeduately after bloom,
so their roots can get a good grab on the soil ------ the next best time was
about 6 weeks after bloom ! I have also heard that rebloomers need the
agitation of being dug up - and that even to put the shovel under, lift
slightly and then put back!!
But, whatever you do, since you have a large clump, I think it would be
interesting to make notes how you do it, try different methods, different
places in the garden (sun - and of course some need more water than regulars
- I keep my rebloomers together --separate from the others) and THEN! let
us know the results!!

P.S. As soon as I have tinme I'm going to email about something along this
line I'm trying ---breaking all rules, a case of do as I say, not as I'm
doing!!!
