I use a multi-compartmented plastic box, designed for trout lures.
I tape a piece of paper inside the lid, and draw lines matching the
compartment dividers. I keep tweezers and one pencil nubbin inside the box,
and the rest of the compartments hold the plucked anthers of pollen, labeled
according to source. I keep the box inside a ziplock bag in the garage
refrigerator, and try to use any pollen within a week. I also keep a
cribsheet in the bag, where I can list every cross and on which stalk and
budsite it was made. As much as possible, I try to keep each stalk
dedicated to a single cross, although I won't waste a single stalk from a
garden newcomer if I have two or three crosses I want to make. Most
important is to keep the box level so the pollen doesn't migrate. I can
carry my little box around from plant to plant for half an hour before work
in the morning; I find this approach efficient and convenient.
