<Linda, I was so excited about the kit and your explanation of
gathering, storing, and swabbing pollen that I forgot to ask my
question! Are we free to do this with any iris or are some of them
patented, and if so, then what are the rules here?

There is one major rule - have fun! Figure out what makes it fun for
you, then just do it. I think there have been a few patented irises,
but those patents would only apply to the registered cultivar, not to
its babies.
There are some rules for naming and registering any babies you come up
with before you sell them, but if you are just starting out, you will
have a few years before you will need to worry about that.
The only other rule I can think of is for writing down the crosses that
you make - the pod parent is listed first, then the pollen parent with
an X in between (i.e., LINDA'S FOLLY X MAYTAG RED). If you are making
crosses using an unknown cultivar, make up a garden name for it (Aunt
Nelly's pink) so you can keep track of which parents you used.
And if you want to know how different colors and patterns might be
inherited, there is plenty of help here, in the archives at
Mallorn/Hortnet, and in The World of Iris, available from AIS.
Most will tell you to plan your crosses carefully and keep a clear idea
in mind of what you are trying to achieve. And most of us in this part
of the world where weather throws a regular set of monkey wrenches into
any plan, make whatever crosses seem like a good idea at the time <g>.
I spend a lot of time planning crosses in the winter and again once they
are blooming. But I also really look at the flower and growth
characteristics of both parents when I get ready to make a cross. For
example, I try to cross super tough cultivars with some that aren't
quite so tough but have better flower form. Be prepared for a
rollercoaster of anticipation, joy and sorrow. And always enjoy your
children even if they aren't up to standards for winning awards.
