is very good. Some of my current crop of stalks are going to push above the
foliage, some are not, and some have clearly stalled in the fan. I have
been watching the stalled ones closely. If they begin to droop some, they
may come out with a gentle tug and what you find is....rot, of course. So
I've been trying to remove those ASAP and treat with COMET or AJAX or bleach
and hope the sun, wind and dry air take care of it after that. So far I
have found only six cases of rot from that type; otherwise there have been
only three cases involving the whole plant and at least one of those (a
small plant) was gone before there was any chance of taking any sort of
remedial action. Rather than actually being killed by the freeze, the
plants are susceptable after the freeze. I generally don't have big
problems with rot because of our generally dry weather with low humidity (I
think). The damage to plants this year is easily the worst I've
experienced. They are simply have some trouble growing out of it this time.
I guess the freeze got a lot of incipient growth cells or whatever. I also
wonder if the early and early-mid season blooms that do manage to bloom will
be typical. That, of course, is especially pertinant to seedlings that I
haven't yet seen bloom. Or, to a lesser degree, 2nd year seedlings I'd like
to compare to maiden bloom. I do wish more normal foliage was appearing
than there is at this point, no matter about the bloom.
