CULT: posting Region 7/24 growers poll

We're getting close to the close of the first growers poll for
Kentucky/Tennessee/Mississippi.

Everyone who sent in their data will get a copy of the Excel
spreadsheets for <ALL> HMs & AMs/Dykes/Wister winners for the last three
years. I'm keeping everyone's comments on my original copy, but will
delete them from the copies I send to participants.

I'll send these out soon, so growers will have a chance to look at how
they rated cultivars one more time & make corrections/additions if they
want (like if plants died since they sent in their results - grrr...).

I will post a <summary> of the results this weekend for all cultivars
for which I've received results from at least two growers. The summary
will be the average result.

I've decided not to post the results from just one grower because it
will be unrepresentative of the region and might discourage others from
trying them. Results of the AM comparison show that some cultivars are
excellent performers for some and die for others, not only within the
general region, but also within the same state, so keep that in mind
while looking at the results. A relative few do really well everywhere
and really poorly everywhere. The encouraging result, at least with the
AMs, is that more do really well everywhere than die everywhere.

And, despite my inclination to mistreat my irises (often leaving them to
the vagaries of weather, insects, disease, drought, & weeds) in general,
the cultivars that do best for me also do best for others in the region
& vice versa. This is the advantage of using a relative scale to rank
performance.

It might be fun to post a series of photos this bloom season of what
passes for <above average>, <above average but damaged/absent
blooms/stalks>, & <average> for different growing conditions.... I
suspect Donald Eaves & I are thrilled with performance that would make
growers of irises in happier climes wonder why we bother.
