While waiting for it to get light enough to see if anything new has
opened <g>, I hunted thru the archives to see what has been said before
about gray colored irises and found this, by Tom Little, pigment teacher
& original list master:
<The two classes of pigments (the anthocyanins and the carotenoids) can
be combined in all sorts of delightful ways. The anthocyanins are blue,
violet, purple...(there are red ones, but they don't exist in irises).
The carotenoids are yellow, orange, pink... When both are present, the
visual effect can be reddish, brown, purple, greenish, gray, mulberry,
even black!............... Tom.>
Wrong time of year to be pondering how the mix winds up being red versus
gray.. save that question till summer or winter - violet anthocyanins
plus yellow carotenoids?
