Sounds like you planted them right, but iris are usually planted August to
October (depending on climate) for a spring bloom around May. If the
rhizomes you bought did not already have green leaves, they were
disgracefully dried out before you ever saw them. That's the problem with
buying from K-Mart. Instead of a 1-week garden-to-garden turnaround in
August, they were left in a bin somewhere for about 8 months. Iris can have
amazing abilities to survive, but this is not the way they should be
handled. I sometimes transplant iris in the early spring when they are just
starting their new growth (not dormant dried-out ones). If so, it is best
if they don't bloom that year for the best chance at long-term survival and
increase. Any stalks will probably be stunted anyway, and will detract from
the energy needed to recover. Anything that shows green and stays firm for
at least a couple of months will probably be fine, and most should bloom for
you next year. Otherwise, you can also blame K-Mart for selling what
amounts to varieties either unsuitable for your region and/or varieties
which have virtually been discarded by reputable growers because of their
lousy garden habits.
