I think the choice to live in this high desert climate means that if your
going to grow plants you have to learn to laugh (and cry a bit) with the
weather. My last frost date can be any time from early March to late
April, but the non-native plants don't quite get it and often get nipped.
It makes producing fruit and growing early flowers a bit of a gamble, but
most years it works out OK. Throw in the rodents, deer, wind, dry air,
etc., and it is quite a challenge. In a way it's kind of ironic to have a
healthy undamaged Loris nobilis and Fig growing practically right next to a
frozen Lilac.
