SDB: Rhizome question

I'm hoping anyone with experience with the smaller bearded species might be
able to tell me if they've ever seen an unusual style of increase before.

I've posted a photo to Iris-Photos and it can also be seen in the archives:

New increases are connected to the older rhizome by a "neck"
before widening into 1/2" to 5/8". Clumps are tightly packed and increase is
up as well as out.
