Bo,  if your plant is already rotting, and you want to try to save it, 
you need to treat it NOW.  You can treat it in-ground by scraping out as 
much of the rotted flesh as possible, then dusting the wound liberally 
with Comet kitchen cleanser.  Leave the wound exposed to the sun and air. 
 This *might* stop the rot and save the plant.
