cannot look at an iris and decide what kind of color pattern it is,

I guess it isn't usefull if you want it to describe a colour pattern. There are lots of terms that do describe colour. For hybridizers and pollen daubers it is very usefull. A pink self and a pink glaciata may look much the same but if if you are making crosses the term is very important as these two pinks will produce very differnt results in crosses. If you are not interested in making any crosses then nothing is lost by ignoring the word "glaciata" and leaving it for those of us to whom it does make a difference.
