I've seen something like this on occasion, too. While I don't know the cause,
I do know a couple of things that can cause such things. One is frost damage
to the bud, which can happen long before you see it open. The other is damage
caused by some type of herbicical spray that drifted from a nearby
application. There may well be other causes. With these two, however, you
won't see the same effect again unless the problem occurs in another year,
too.
