CULT:TB:(no subject) from Janet Hueller

Janet, those may be thrips. Thrips are very active tiny little sticks that
jump if disturbed. They snarf up the pollen and contaminate crosses. In
Gladiolus they cause streaking of the foliage and distortion of the bloom, but
I haven't seen the like in irises. They sure can be a problem, though.

Both aphids and thrips are fairly sensitive to Malathion, but that is a direct
remedy and a short-lived solution.

A systemic, such as Cygon 2E (sadly no longer available in most point of sales
places) is a longer term solution, and I have hopes that Merit (Bayer Advanced
Grub Control--Imidicloprid) will have a similar value as a control for both
pests. An iris breeder sure doesn't need either aphids or thrips around!
