I've noticed this behavior on some.  Last spring I found stalks like  that on 
PURE AS GOLD.  Thank goodness most don't initiate that  easily.  Did find one 
seedling this spring that had tried to bloom in the  winter.  It was a first 
year (planted June of 2005) and I'm not sure if  I'll get spring bloom.  Not 
seeing stalks yet but it's still early.
