Hi, I got back in town after being gone for 10 days. Found 2 big pots with
iris that seemed stunted in size of blooms. Last year they were big blooms
and tall stalks. I started to pick off the dead blooms and then noticed that
some weren't dead from blooming, they hadn't even opened but seemed dried up.
I cut one stalk off and then noticed that as I peeled the leaf part away from
the bloom, it looked like sawdust sprinkled in there. When I looked closer I
think it is aphids? could that be??.
The one pot is against a wall and it's a big big pot. I thinned out some of
those plants so there should have been enough room. One of the pots right
next to the house had dutch iris blooming and now the bearded iris are
blooming but they look in worse shape than the other pot. So I started
checking my other iris - old fashioned yellow plain iris and they all had this
stuff in varying amounts. I never ever had this problem before. I cut off
all the stalks and made sure my cutters are disinfected so I won't spread
anything. What should I do/use on the iris so I don't lose them. the ones
that have the most stuff between the stalk and the leaf are my prettiest
iris.(naturally) It's been dry and windy here. high 70's during the day. We
use drip irrigation in the flower beds. Next week it is supposed to be in the
80's
