Bargain software has it where you can download the newest CS3 version for 
$149.95, and CS2 for $99.95.  I used version 5.0 for years, I now use CS2 
and have no plans to upgrade for some time.
There is a terrific training workbook for Photoshop CS that I highly 
recommend, it is called "Classroom in a Book", published by Adobe.
There are several sites which sell educational software, full versions, 
where CS3 is for under $300.00.

I do not have it, but I understand that Photoshop Elements by Adobe is a
substantial subset of Photoshop, and at $99.00 or less, a substantial
discount from Photoshop CS3 at $649.00.
