Re: CULT: surprises

I too am having a very early spring. I have SDBs, IBs, BBs, and TBs in bloom. Also
I have buds on LAs and spurias. This is going to be a strange spring for us here in Dallas
for sure.

Subject: [iris] CULT: surprises

This is a surprising year! First, I have lots of MDB and SDB first-year
seedlings in bud. The first will bloom tomorrow (in the rain, if the forecast
holds). Normally, I don't get bloom on first-year seedlings here, so it's
going to be a great treat. I also expect some first-year bloom on several TB
seedlings -- how many, I can't yet tell. I don't see any fat fans yet --
am just judging by the amount of increase.

But the really big surprise is six or more bloomstalks well up on two TB
seedlings -- 03J1 and 02T8. (03J1 involves WINESAP, OPPORTUNITY and CHINESE
TREASURE; 02T8 involves HOLY NIGHT, SWEETER THAN WINE and KNIGHTED. It is one
which I may have mentioned as "evergreen" in a recent post.) I checked my
photos of these two in bloom in earlier years, and the dates were April 25 and
April 26. Barring some untoward weather occurrence, they're going to be 2
weeks early! I'm afraid to take a close look at the rest of them.

Last year, we were under a severe drought, which was just officially declared
ended this past week. Yesterday was the first real rainfall -- as opposed
to passing showers and drizzles -- that I can remember in months. So, why
this bounty, and why so early? Mother Nature ain't tellin'. -- Griff
