Re: HYB: questions about TB genetics

That is intrguing information. do you have some examples of this? I'd be very interested. Particularly of SDB X SDB, examples producing TB plants. SDB are amphidiploids so should always have 8/12 gametes and thus 8/8/12/12 offspring, but it may be possible to get tall seedlings, but do they meet any other criterian of TB class?

It should be theoretical possible to get a 12/12/12/12 plant from a cross of an IB X TB, but I would need to see some information on gamette formation from IBs.

I have gotten TB height seedlingss from SDB X TB, but they didn't meet class in any of the other criterian. that is, they bloomed with IBs and had IB sized flowers. The stalks allthough TB height were weak and went down easily, and had IB bud count.

I have also gotten TB height plants from IB X TB, but again they never seemed to be convincenly a TB, just looked like an IB wanabee TB.

Steve; It is possible to get TBs even when crossing two SDBs let alone any of the other median Iris. The SDBs and others are not that many generations away from crosses with TBs. Today you are probably less likely to have a TB appear in the seedlings than when the SDBs were only one or two generations away from TBs but it can still happen. Obviously early crosses of TBs and I. pumila that gave the SDBs used earlier TBs. It would be interesting to see what Modern high quality TBs crossed with I. pumila would produce.

Subject: [iris] HYB: questions about TB genetics

Hello,
I was wondering if it is possible to end up with TB seedlings from crossing any of the smaller beardeds. Either to themselves or outcrossing or backcrossing to TB again. I know that initially TB were developed from crossing various species over generations. I also understand that the smaller varieites were developed by intercrossing different species to the TB over generations.

 Thanks for the help!
