CULT:freeze damage

Thought I'd report that the freeze damage was a bit more severe in my area than orginally reported.

Last year the freeze was so bad that the stalks were all laying down by the time I could master the courage for a garden stroll.?

This year the temp. dropped to 28 one night and 32 the second night.? Each morning, the ground was covered with frost, although the second morning it wasn't as heavy nor did it last as long.

At the temperatures rose, last week,?it became obvious that certain stalks were not growing.? Anything that was about 6-8 inches tall was lost. ?As the week progressed they turned white and/or brown.

The SDB's (in the garden) chose to open during this time.? The poor little blooms were melted.? SDB's blooming in pots by the house were spared.?

All of the early stalks on the TB's have been blasted.? Stopped in their tracks, never to grow again!? Some early irises, some rebloomers, and some new seedlings will not be seen this year.?

Example:? My clumps of Platinum only produced 4 stalks and 3 were cut down.? Time will tell if the pollen is good in the fourth.?I will reconsider including it in any of my rebloom lines.? At best, it will not be used extensively.?

On the bright side, many of my rebloom seedlings are now showing color.? Branching is hideous and the plants will mainly be judged on growth habits this year.?

The irises that fared best were the ones I moved last year.? Most are late varieties, but not all.? ?Many sat under my carport for 6 weeks, yet they are putting up multiple stalks.?

Mother Nature has gone nuts.? Or is it me??
