It all depends on your growing season.

I have a very short season with frost coming as early as August in some years
so all of my irises are divided and replanted in the spring. Knowing that they
will survive has a trade-off since most will not bloom that year or if they
do, will be shorter than normal.

Waiting until August (when a lot of bearded irises are shipped) is usually
certain to kill them.
