Carolyn....If you choose the cultivars carefully you should have TBs blooming
over a longer period. Reblooming TBs will tend to bloom much earlier (2
weeks) than other TBs. My big reblooming TB bed is in full bloom before some
others have started. Rebloomers are worth growing even in areas where
rebloom is difficult to get (upstate NY) because of their great vigor and
this early bloom. There are other TBs that bloom very early...GENTLE RAIN,
INSTRUCTOR, SUKY are examples
Then there are very late TBs. I have some that don't seem to start until the
vast majority are nearly finished. MY KATIE is a good example. The really
early bloomers and really late bloomers frequently end up not getting the
awards they should from AIS because national conventions and regional iris
tours are usually scheduled around peak bloom season...and these marvelous
season extenders WHICH SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY REWARDED end up not being seen by
many judges, and thus end up being ignored in the voting. This is a problem
that we should work on correcting I think.
I think it would be a very useful service if members of this listserver would
nominate a few of their candidates for early and late season extenders. Then
people could choose some to grow and have a TB season for 5 to 6 weeks.
