Another benefit of having an AIS show is that it encourages a higher
standard of quality in what is shown to the public. Having it be a real
show helps to eliminate many stalks that don't represent our favorite flower
well, and it tends to help people pay attention to presenting the ones
that are selected in their best light.
It's true that there are people who can dampen others' enthusiasm for
shows by unhealthy attitudes toward competition, but I always tend to
console myself by thinking that we are providing an outlet for those
tendencies and keeping them off the streets. The vast majority of iris
folks are wonderful about everything, and I can't think of a better
environment for interaction and therapy for those who need socialization.
Judged shows provide feedback, and that feedback can stimulate discussion
about irises--it provides a focus for both exhibitors and the public and
an excellent conversation starter. It is especially fun as a beginning
exhibitor to win a ribbon or two--those pats on the back can come at a
crucial time in the creation of a true iris fanatic. My two cents.
