ALL of the AIS Horticulture Awards are based entirely on seeing and judging the
iris growing in gardens. NONE are based on exhibition or show judging. The
judge should see the iris growing and performing well in at least three
different gardens, preferably in other regions, before even thinking about
voting for it.
No seedling can begin the process of being considered for or win any AIS awards
until it has been introduced. The EC (Exhibition Certificate) that I referred
to is an "encouragement" from judges that they saw and evaluated the
unintroduced seedling and felt like it was unique. It is not an endorsement to
even introduce the seedling!
