RE: Copy of: Old Dirt Dobber
My wife Macey is the granddaughter of Thomas A. Williams, the original Old Dirt
Dobber. We ran in to Sam Caldwell about two years ago at a Nashville Pond
Society meeting. Although frail, he appeared in good health and he and Macey had
a good time visiting. If you are interested I will find his address for your
correspondence. We are members of HIPS and have shared photos and newspaper
articles from the 1930s and 40s when Mr Williams was alive and when Nashville
was known as "the Iris City" for its numerous hybridizers and week-long iris
festival each year. Although the festival is no more, the iris is the state
flower of Tennessee.
In 1993 Macey and I moved 4,000 tall beardeds that were in Mr. Williams gardens
to our farm after the death of his sister, who moved them to her home from his
gardens at his death. They have afforded us many hours of pleasure and pain (the
weeding is tough!) and have introduced us to many very nice people ( Mike and
Ann Lowe in particular).
We have taken on the name of Iris City Gardens, the name of Mr.Williams gardens,
and have produced a small catalog (this is our second year) of beardless,
bearded and water garden plants. We take great pleasure in seeing the "Old Dirt
Dobber" on the Internet.
