About the IRIS-L Internet Mailing List
1. INTRODUCTION
IRIS-L is an internet mailing list devoted to discussion on
garden irises. Both experienced irisarians and beginners
are welcome. If you grow, breed, or study irises, or just
want to join the conversation, you are invited to subscribe.
To subscribe, send email to LISTSERV@Rt66.com
In the body of the message, type
SUBSCRIBE IRIS-L <yourname>
where <yourname> stands for your actual name, not
your email address.
If you are new to LISTSERV mailing lists, take a look
at section 4, How LISTSERV Works, below.
IRIS-L was created by Tom Tadfor Little (telp@Rt66.com)
on February 1, 1996. It was made possible by the generous
support of Bill Smoot, Mike Lowe, and others.
New subscribers are encouraged to post a message
introducing themselves.
2. POLICIES
IRIS-L is an unmoderated list. This means the list owner
does not personally review each message to decide if it's
appropriate. This responsibility rests with the subscribers.
Please note the following policies.
a. Advertising
Off-topic advertising is *not* welcome. However, advertising
relevant to the subject of the list (garden irises) may be posted,
if it is done unobtrusively and clearly labeled as advertisement.
b. Courtesy
Please respect other subscribers. Follow the same standards
of courtesy that you would if speaking with someone in person
in a public place.
In addition, there are a few common courtesies that you should
observe as a member of a mailing list:
* Use a descriptive subject line on your messages, so that
other subscribers can choose the messages that interest them.
* Sign your messages with your real name and email address,
as a minimum. Some subscribers can see this information in
the header of your message, others cannot.
* Don't post excessively long messages.
c. Off-Topic Posts
I enjoy the freedom of unmoderated lists, and I hope you do
to. I think this discussion group should resemble a conversation
between gardeners over the backyard fence. There is no
prohibition on humor, idle chit-chat, or the occasional off-topic
exchange.
However, please remember that people subscribe to this list
because they are interested in irises. If the iris talk gets buried
under a mountain of off-topic chit-chat, the list ceases to be
useful. I may occasionally suggest that a certain line of discussion
be taken off the list and continued by private email.
3. INFORMATION FILES
The list owner maintains a small set of information files about
irises and this list. These will be posted to the list at regular
intervals. They are available on the world wide web at
http://www.rt66.com/~telp/garden.htm
You may also request copies directly from the list
owner, Tom Tadfor Little (telp@Rt66.com).

All postings to the list are kept in publicly accessible
archives. Subject indices and instructions for accessing
the archives are available on the web at the URL above, or
by email from the list owner.
4. How LISTSERV Works
LISTSERV is a computer program that manages mailing lists.
It keeps a record of all the subscribers to the list, and every
message sent to the list is duplicated and mailed to every
subscriber.
Even though we talk about "subscribing" to a mailing list,
there is no charge for subscribing. It is just a way of saying your
name is on the list.
When you subscribe, the LISTSERV gives you a password.
The password is *not* needed for the normal use of the list.
To send a message for general distribution to the list, email it to
IRIS-L@Rt66.com
To send a command to the LISTSERV program (for example,
if you want to be dropped from the list), send email to
LISTSERV@Rt66.com
In the body of your message, you must type a proper command
for the program. A few common commands are listed here:
SUBSCRIBE IRIS-L <yourname>
adds your name and email address to this mailing list
UNSUB IRIS-L
drops you from the list (do not add your name; only these
two words are needed)
REVIEW IRIS-L
gives you a list of everyone currently on the list
SET IRIS-L MAIL DIGEST
instructs the list processor to send you periodic digests
of the list messages, rather than each one individually
as it is posted
SET IRIS-L MAIL ACK
returns to normal (non-digest) mode
HELP
gives you a list of other LISTSERV commands
If you have questions or problems that the LISTSERV program
can't deal with, write to the list owner, Tom Tadfor Little, at
telp@Rt66.com
Summary (IMPORTANT):
IRIS-L@Rt66.com is the LIST ADDRESS, used when you want
to post a message for everyone to read.
LISTSERV@Rt66.com is the LISTSERVER, a computer program
that processes commands (like subscribing and unsubscribing).
telp@Rt66.com is the LIST OWNER, a human being who is your
point of contact for questions or problems.
