Re: Bot. pronunciation

Not only do I say pseud-a-COR-us, I stubbornly refuse to be corrected by
the pseu-DAC-or-us crowd!

I have noticed a tendancy, in American English at least, to accent the
second syllable of a 4-syllable word regardless of how inconsistent it may
be (given the roots of the word) - i.e., SPEC-tro-scope (given as derived
from spectro- and -scope), SPEC-tro-graph, SPEC-tro-gram, but spec-TROS-co-py
and spec-TROM-e-ter. It seems to give a lot of people fits; I saw a discussion
on the aquatic plants list a while back on hy-GRO-fil-a vs. hy-gro-FIL-a.

It seems a bit cold in here - I'd better go check the THERM-o-met-er.
