Re: Winter Kill?

Lonnie:

The various species that make up the Louisiana Iris hybrids bloom in South
Louisiana in mid April. They will be long past bloom when you get there in
June...and that will be much too early for seed collecting.

There are a number of mail order sources for various Louisiana species,
most notably Lone Star Iris Garden, Garland, TX. I can look up address if
you need...but I think they advertize in the AIS Bulletin.

By the way, I doubt very seriously if you would have any problems with
alligators...if you are careful. Snakes might be another minor problem to
watch for! But a bigger issue is the legality of collecting wild plants.
Of course, it's no problem if you collect on the private property of your
friend. I don't think any of the Louisiana species are endangered or
(perhaps?) even threatened. So, getting permission to collect would not be
a problem I would think. The old iris literature is full of interesting
tales of Dr. Small and other intrepid collectors who located and collected
the fine specimens which later provided the parentage for our spectacular
modern cultivars. Just be sure to take along some "Off" insect
repellant...the locals don't call mosquitoes "the Confederate Air Force"
for no reason!!!
