I've been growing JIs for only a few years, so I think I still count as a
beginner. One that I would definitely include in the recommendations for
beginners is CRYSTAL HALO. It is a vigorous and consistent one, and it has
good garden visibility. HEGIRA also seems to be a consistent and reliable one
in places I've visited. Don't trust me for choices of favorites, though;
my JI tastes are still changing--I like the 3-fall ones and can't yet fully
share the oohs and aahs of the experienced JI folks at the ones with lots
of petals, for example.
I like to get mine from Draycott where Carol Warner grows them without
supplemental water and provides nice divisions, but Ensata does very well
too and has a fantastic selection.
