Hi folks. This list has grown so large that I'm afraid I have to introduce
a policy about handling undeliverable mail. The "big lists" do this, and I
think I need to now too.
Whenever the listserver tries to send list mail to your address and cannot
reach your host computer, it bounces an error message back to me. A few
of these are not troublesome, but with the increased number of subscribers,
I've been getting so many bounced mail messages that it's difficult to
notice more important problems with the list as they come up.
So here's the new policy.
If your address generates more than 10 error messages two days in a row,
I will put you on digest mode. When you get your digest and discover that
this has happened, you are welcome to go off digest again. (See instructions
in the welcome message or the "INFO: About Iris-L" file.) Most delivery
problems are temporary, so this will probably be a one-time occurrence.
If you find yourself being put on digest mode repeatedly because of bounced
messages, it's time to talk with your internet provider about the reliability
of their service.
Most subscribers seldom if ever experience delivery problems, so chances
are you'll never have to worry about this new policy. But if you do find
yourself put on digest inexplicably some day, this is the reason why. I'm
sorry for the occasional inconvenience this will cause, but it's the only
way for me to control the volume of error messages I have to deal with as
list owner.
