Someone earlier recommended name markers from Eon Industries (They advertise
in AIS Bulletin.) They have several types of markers. I've used two types that
they have and hightly recommend using their "Rose Marker". This marker has a
wider area to write on and has four holes that you place the curved support
thru. The other type of marker has the medal tag which bends on the ends around
the wire support. I've found that with time, heating & cooling, that this tag
tends to become loose and will eventually come off the wire support. The Rose
Marker doesn't do this and is even hard to pull out of the ground when using a
hose to water.
One unfinished project that I started and haven't gotten around to
completing is to print all of the info from the Registration & Introduction book
onto a piece of paper credit card size. I then laminate this with laminating
plastic I.D. card size and glue it on the rose marker with rubber caulking. It
sticks very well and can be removed, the marker is permanent and rain-proof, and
l still have markers like this that I did six years ago.
The surprising part of all of this is that you have all the info about your
iris right in front of you. No more running to the books to find out date of
introductions, height, etc. You'd be surprised at how fast you learn all the
info about that particular variety, because every time you look at the iris,
weed, fertilize, etc this info stares you in the face and is reinforced.
I consider this the "ultimate" marker, but it takes time and effort costs a
little more.
It looks very professional though. I usually make the name is larger fonts so
you don't have to squint to read the name. The only info you don't have
laminated is if that cultivar wins an award.
