Today was a day of meetings. We started with the Editor's meeting that I
already mentioned...Terry is looking for writers - people he can draw from on
a particular topic. As we know, Terry is not on-line, but Scott certainly is
and apparently faxes in the wee hours.
I then attended a HIPS meeting with our HIPS representative, Kathryn Mohr.
Region 2 has voted to invite HIPS to hold their first ever convention in
Region 2 in the year 2000 and Kathryn was making a presentation to the HIPS
Board. The proposal was approved - so we're going for it! Anyone out there
who has an interest in historics - let me know and I'll pass the word along.
The Board met from 1pm-5pm. Most of this meeting is business but President
Niswonger DID bring up the problem of the iris vendor who has taken people's
money yet not delivered irises...nor responded. He said he was not convinced
that he SHOULD report this in the Board meeting...but that the customers have
turned to AIS forhelp...and that there seems to be a certain responsibility
there. AIS will come up with a policy statement on this type of ethical
dilemma. I was interested and PLEASED that AIS would take the initiative on
something like this
There was talk that AIS is aware that even local newsletters are of value and
should be preserved and so the RVPs are to get the word out to the affiliates
that all local newsletter should be sent to both the historian, Larry Harder
and to Ev Jones for the AIS Library. This is being done with the REGIONAL
newsletters...but not with the locals.
There was talk about improving the AIS insurance aggregate to $3 million
(from $1M) since many malls are requiring that now. This will take time.
After the Board meeting, I went to the RVP meeting. A great deal of time
there was spent on the Youth Membership. Each RVP had to give a report on
youth activities in his/her region. It's painfully obvious that this is
something that needs a GREAT deal of work. George Sutton offered to compile
information on the various youth programs
THEN ... I was in a judges training meeting - Glen Corlew will restudy some
of the things voted upon by AIS in the fall... such as the rule whereby all
tests MUST consist of 20 questions. It was pointed out that some subjects
are less involved than others...and some timeframes are shorter. A
suggestion was made that a REQUIRED test - prehaps for students - should be
the handbook itself.
I also attended a SJI meeting (cancelled) and a siberian iris Board meeting.
no sun/flowers for Kathyguest today.
People are really filtering in now. I spent some time this evening with Tom
Abrego...saw the Willotts briefly...the pace is picking up.
Tomorrow are a bazillion more meetings...but I have a secret ride to Roris
Gardens at noon!
