re: burrowing vs surfacing rhizomes

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that my rhizomes tunnel under the ground
instead of rising to the surface. They want to get down there where they can
rot faster! I had heard from some of our local club members that their
rhizomes 'surface' and thought they were just giving me a hard time. I am
exaggerating - most of mine do stay pretty much on top of or at least with
their turtle tops above the ground. But if they are underground, they rot,
rather than hauling themselves topside. And some varieties do seem to be
'sinkers'.
