A complete makeover is planned. You'll hardly even recognize it. About the
only thing the same will be the size of paper it is printed on.
The graphic makeover will include:
- new cover design, including better full page size photos.
- more color photos throughout the book
- clear distinction between articles and ads
- articles will be set in larger, easier to read text
- better control over black & white photos
Editorial changes will include:
- a "letters to the Editor" section
- the return of "FlighLines" (excerpts from the Round Robins)
- a balanced variety of articles, including some scientific, some folksy,
and some garden reviews. There are a wide variety of readers of the
Bulletin. Ideally, all will find something of interest.
- a shortened summary of board minutes (rather than publishing the entire
thing), with a copy of complete minutes upon request. Same for budgets and
other "business" matters of the AIS that most folks are not very interested
in.
- earlier mailing dates (you should receive your June issue by the first
week of June)
Regarding ads: Some readers really like them. For years they have provided
some of the best color pictures in the Bulletin (though hopefully that will
change). The Editor has little control over ads, and they vary quite a bit
from issue to issue. The April issue each year usually contains the most
ads by far, because that is when the commercial growers are introducing new
catalogs and new irises. If the grower gets the ad in early enough, they
are sometimes in the January issue - which usually has the second largest
number of ads. The July and October issues usually have the least amount of
advertising, as the Iris season winds down, and growers are starting to
think about next year's intros.
Now that I have teased you all, you will have to wait 'till July to see it. :-)
