In reply to Tom:
In New Mexico I used to plant lots of stuff around my irises and never had
any problems. I had 4o'clocks, thyme and cosmos mainly, with some dianthus.
I just watered the whole lot and left them alone.
I have planted dianthus and snapdragons around my irises here in east Texas,
both grow as perennials here with little care. I will wait and see if I
have any problems. At the last house, the grass got back in the small iris
bed and was thick and hearty... the irises bloom as we speak. I put black
ground cloth around them to try to stop the grass, it just grew anyway. I
have NOT found any rot here, I do find old rhisomes with very, very tiny
holes in them. I dont know how tiny the borer holes are but these are about
1/64". I usually just throw those rhisomes out and use others.
Time will tell with the new beds.
