Now that the furore over the pronunciation of Iris pseudacorus has died
down, perhaps someone can tell me how to pronounce Iris zaprjagajewii? ;-)
Seriously, I would be interested to hear of other peoples' experiences in
growing Juno (or should I say Scorpiris) Irises.
I have I. bucharica and I. cycloglossa, and both of these are easy. I would
like grow more of the species, so I would like to hear about experiences
people have had, either growing them in pots or outdoors. There is a bit of
a mystique about this group, but I was surprised to learn that I. nicolai is
grown outdoors commercially. This plant is one of those highest up my list
for acquisition soon, but it comes with a bit of a reputation for miffyness
(sp.?). A pity, since its bright, colourful flowers are amongst the
earliest, January under glass. Maybe growing them outdoors slows them down
so they don't appear above ground till spring has really arrived, and that's
the secret.
However, what about the others? All comments gratefully received - failures
as well as successes!
Perhaps it would be advisable to add that the weather here never gets very
cold in winter (-8C for one night was the lowest this year). Nor are
summers scorchingly hot (it doesn't go over 30C very often) , but they are
quite dry, though it can rain at any time.
