You have a great misconception about the iris borer. The dastard does not
enter the rhizome from the soil. It enters the leaf as a very small larvae
and eats its way down to the rhizome where it eats and eats and eats until it
bores thru the shell and into the soil to pupate. It then metamorphosizes and
emerges as the moth lays the eggs and starts the cycle over again.
