They're used as part of biological sewage treatment systems. There's one in
California. There, their rampant growth is a plus, and they're grown in a
controlled way. But they are really not a good idea for use in large, untended
ponds because of their escapist tendencies and the crowding-out-natives
problems others mentioned earlier.
Grow Iris pseudacorus, I. laevigata, and I. versicolor instead! (bringing it
back to irises)
