Excellent Iris Publications

I just received my copy of the Historical Iris Preservation Society's
newsletter "Roots". Surely no other section of the AIS matches the
consistent quality of this publication. Mike and Anne Lowe should receive an
HC award for the effort and talent they have put into "Roots". The articles
(from the likes of Sharon McAllister and Clarence Mahan) are diverse,
thoughtful and well-written. The editors have a keen sense of what is needed
to thoroughly communicate information to the reader. I was disappointed to
read that the Lowes are abdicating the editorship. I feel spoiled by the
quality they have given to "Roots" and previously to the newsletter of the
Reblooming Iris Society.

Another outstanding publication recently received is the 1996 Yearbook of the
Aril Society International. This year's theme is tetraploid arils, and it is
pursued in a variety of articles and mini-articles, from different points of
view. The result is highly readable and informative. The ASI yearbook
features beautiful color photography on both sides of the cover. The clump
of ANDROMACHE is gorgeous. The cover photo of PERSIAN PADISHAH reaffirms for
me why that cultivar is my pre-season choice to receive my Dykes Medal vote.
We owe the thoughtful conception and artistic layout of this volume to the
editor, Tom Little.
