HYB: Low-Tech Tools

I've mentioned use of the microscope for checking pollen -- both ploidy and
viability. If all you want to know is whether the pollen is ripe, or there's
any left on an anther, though, I've found something simpler . I bought a
lighted magnifying glass at Radio Shack, with 1.5X main lens and 5X insert.

Low-tech, but at $6 (plus cost of batteries) the price is right.
