Re: Bloom report - those that tried and failed

Hello List,

Of the 60 prox I ordered last year the following apparently will not bloom
due to freeze damage of the buds:

COPPER CLASSIC (Roderick '75)
JUAN VALDEZ (Maryott 93)
BATIK (Ensminger '86)
CITY LIGHTS (Dunn, M. '91) this one may try, but is clearly blighted by
frost damage.

The following are probable/possible wipeouts as well:

BEVERLY SILLS (Hager '79)
CELESTE AZUL (Shockey '75) -AB
KOKO KNOLL (Hunt '84) -AB
SAHRA TASH (Shockey '86) -AB

On the plus side OPALS FOR ETHEL (McAllister '84) - AB is showing color in
the bud, as is the aril. All those already grown here in years past seem
to have escaped the freeze and will likely bloom. It remains to be seen
how many of the newer ones will manage. Some only had good growth on the
increase and the mother rhizome appears too sickly to manufacture any
bloom. 4 didn't put on increase and I'd rather they wait rather than bloom
out. None showed any outward signs of much damage from the freeze, but bud
growth came pretty much to a grinding halt on those which were apparent and
now they've grown enough the damage can be seen.

Zone 7 - if these do not acclimatize the vagaries of our weather, they will
need to move further north or south. Too bad.
