	Several conditions are involved in the above.

	1. The shape of the rhizome is determined by the aril content of
that rhizome. Quarterbreds may show little aril characteristics, but half
and three quarters more (rounded, flattened with many increases).

	2. Water content and drainage have effects.  Rhizomes in the South
where there is more rainfall may  be larger and where drainage is very
sharp, the rhizome can take on a flattened appearance.

	3. Red rhizomes occur later in the season when it is very dry or
occur where the soil is quite sandy.
