Rusty -- Sydney B. Mitchell, in Iris For Every Garden, says that
"Stigmas of iris flowers are generally receptive soon after the flower
fully opens and remain so until shortly before it collapses."  I have
also heard from other hybridizers that the stigma will take pollen
effectively up to the point of collapse. I have routinely attempted
crosses on flowers that are beginning to fold up, but have always
forgotten to mark the tag to show whether such a cross took. Maybe you
can be a latter day verifier/negator of this claim.
