Zelma,
I am one of the people that was discussing I. unguicularis a few weeks ago. I
grow two different cultivars currently. They are I. unguicularis 'Mary
Barnard' and just plain I. unguicularis. I found I. unguicularis 'marginata'
in the Iris Gallery catalog last year, ordered and planted it but it is now
dead. I have erected a headstone in it's place.
I. unguicularis is very species like in form, very narrow, tough grassy
leaves 1-1 1/2' feet long, and flowers appear from about September/October
through about March/April. The flowers are lavender-purple and grow on 8"
perianth tubes, no stalks. Though both cultivars that I grow are generally
lav-purple, they do come in other colors. The cultivar 'Walter Butt' is a pale
icy lavender. I have not yet found this one in a catalog.
I was told that the area for growing I. unguicularis is limited but cannot
remember what zones they were suited for. I should think that if you live near
Placerville (birthplace of the Space Age Iris!!) that you should be able to
grow I. unguicularis but other L-ers might be able to help you better
regarding your growing conditions.
